How will you be celebrating the Lunar New Year differently this year? When my family immigrated to the U.S., they decided to start celebrating the Lunar New Year on January 1st instead of February. It was more convenient, especially since their work schedule did not include the Lunar New Year. This year was a bit bittersweet as I wasn’t with my family in California. So I did a little fire ritual for the first time with friends and I burned what I would like to leave behind in 2020.
What are some of the Lunar New Year traditions that you always stick to? I grew up eating tteokguk and manduguk, and playing yut, a game with wooden sticks, and I would wear my hanbok as I bowed to my elders to get some money. They were like ATM machines! Now that I have a kid, I’m trying to find ways to bring these traditions back.
