Together with her niece, and utilizing the NasonMoretti glassmaking factory in Murano, they settled on a design that was all their own. A collection of tumblers, goblets, and bowls that appear dipped in colors borrowed from the purple-pink Positano skies. “It then took another year to design various different shapes and finally present them to Matches who had been waiting on this project a long time. At first, we wanted to launch this year at Salone del Mobile but then obviously everything was canceled because of COVID. Even the people in Murano stopped working because they had to shut the furnace. They finally resumed and finally, we are here and very happy with the results. I think colors are beautiful,” she says. “They are very much inspired by Positano colors.”
Carla had long envisioned her own line of glassware, one that could be used at Le Sirenuse’s Aldo’s Bar (formerly the Champagne and Oyster Bar). The design process took multiple years because, as Carla explained, her own creations needed to be an improvement on the hotel’s current cups and coupes. Le Sirenuse deals with only the best, and its glassware, from revered Murano glassmaker Carlo Moretti, was just that. Carla has said she was “flabbergasted” the first time she held Moretti’s tumblers—clear glassware with colorful, textured stripes evocative of their artisanal technique. Ever since that moment, Moretti’s glassware has added to the atmosphere of a sunset cocktail at Le Sirenuse. “I’ve been selling Carlo Moretti for 20 years in my boutique and therefore we were connected with the Murano glassware. Glass is a material that you get very addicted to, the colors are vibrant and the more you see, the more you want to explore. So I decided, Why don’t I make my own collection? And [from] there we embarked on a journey that took about two years to get to where we are now,” she says. “In the beginning, I was so influenced by Carlo Morretti’s style. I tried to follow on that path and then I realized my glasses would have been just a copy and I just refused. I stopped the project and started completely fresh.”
