Lieu, a Democrat from California, described for the assembled senators how that immigrant experience had shaped his devotion to the United States—“Like all of you, I love this country”—and the debt he owed his parents, who came to the U.S. from Taiwan when Lieu was three. “We started off living in the basement of a person’s home,” Lieu recalled. “We were poor, and they went to flea markets to sell gifts to make ends meet. Over many years, they built a small business, opened six gift stores, and achieved the American dream. It’s one reason I joined United States Air Force on active duty. I believe America is an exceptional country.”
“I am an immigrant.”When Representative Ted Lieu took to the Senate floor last week, he began by speaking those words and by talking about the long journey that had brought him to this historic moment. Lieu was one of the nine House impeachment managers charged with the prosecution of former president Donald J. Trump for inciting the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The prosecution may have failed to reach the 67-vote supermajority needed to convict Trump—the final tally was 57–43— but Lieu and his colleagues nonetheless left a lasting impression.
