We have spoken about it and she’s read a lot of the pieces that are about our relationship. Over the past decade, I have been rebuilding my relationship with my mother. We’re both committed to that but it’s a work in progress. She has been really supportive of my writing. When I won the Whiting Award, she sat in the audience when I read a piece that was all about her.
She has her own stories that I didn’t fully know when I was younger and that I know more of now. I can acknowledge some of the decisions she made that I could not acknowledge as a child. It is still really raw and hard, but we allow each other our own stories. There isn’t just one truth, and memory can’t be trusted, including how we remember our own actions. That’s true for me as much as it is for her. We are trying to hold the multiple stories as we muddle through figuring out who we are to each other.
