After that, we continued to protest. We protested many times, and the government moved the issue from the Parliament to the Constitutional Court because they thought this way would be easier for them. [Editor’s note: Since 2015, Poland’s ruling party has enacted a number of measures that have functionally stacked the Constitutional Court, the highest in the land, in their favor, with almost no room for dissent.] If you don’t have an independent judiciary, anything can happen to you, and no law can protect you.
On Sunday, the 25th of September, I called for the National Strike. Very soon, my friend started an event on Facebook, and we formed an organizer’s group. What we did was kind of trick people into organizing protests. I put this poll on Facebook and asked people, “Do you want to protest? In which city? Name the cities.” And people started meeting other people who were interested in protesting in their cities, even in small towns. In the end, 150 cities in Poland protested. Of course, it was in the big cities, it was in the capital city. But the most important protests took place in the small and middle-size cities. That scared the government. They thought that there would be places in Poland where there would be no resistance. But it turned out that the government doesn’t know if there’s a city that won’t protest. I think that’s what really scared them. The initial ban was dropped after that.
