“Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is about to become the most-watched local prosecutor in the nation,” the Journal-Constitution wrote on Friday. This, however, is not the first time that Willis has been the subject of national attention. In 2014, when Willis was assistant district attorney, she led the historic criminal prosecution of a dozen Atlanta public school educators for allegedly engaging in a “widespread, cleverly disguised” conspiracy to cheat on standardized test scores in an effort to protect their jobs and win bonuses from administrators. In her opening statement, Willis described “cheating parties,” in which the educators erased students’ wrong answers and replaced them with right ones over dinners of fish and grits. “I can’t make this up,” she told the jury.
The move immediately catapulted Willis—who defeated her former boss, two-decade incumbent Paul L. Howard, Jr., in the Democratic primary last year—into the national spotlight, one that included an appearance on Rachel Maddow’s prime-time MSNBC show on Thursday:
